This year my friends and I are planning on doing our first 5+ day hike. We are either doing a section of the AT, or a trail in Michigan that runs along Lake Michigan.i am well stocked with an Osprey Atmos 65, a full hammock setup, stove, clothes, sleeping bag, etc. the last piece of the puzzle are the shoes. The trip is in July so I want to pick something up in the next few months to break them in. Here my issue, I have no idea what I want, and need some suggestions. As a background, I am a very fit 27 year old. I was used to wearing barefoot style shoes, and had done some hikes in my five fingers, but then I tore my Achilles doing crossfit. I have a pair of nice timberland hikers, but they are heavy and if I spend more than an hour in them my back starts to kill me. I have also hiked in tennis shoes, and they were better, but when the trail got rocky they weren’t the best. So I’m not sure what to get. I have looked at trail shoes but will those hold up on a long hike? I know people Have also done the AT in Chaco, but are those risky. I would love the opinions of some more experienced hikers who have done longer hikes. The plan is to do 70 – 90 miles.
