KeymasterThe pliers, of course, are super-cool, with their leverage-multiplying design that also ensures the handles always unfolds symmetrically. I wish every multi-tool had pliers like this. However, there are a couple things that bother me. Most of the fold-out tools don’t have friction-reducing shims between them, so when I unfold the saw (for example), the awl, flathead screwdriver, crosshead screwdriver, and can opener all unfold along with it. In fact, the only tool in the same handle as the saw that *doesn’t* unfold when I open the saw is the file…which is also the only tool in that handle that has a shim between it and the next tool.
Also, the fact that I can’t access any of the tools without unfolding the pliers first seems…antiquated. I appreciate a multi-tool with its own unique character, but I think Leatherman hit the nail on the head when they designed the Wave with tools accessible while the handles are folded. I’m rather mystified as to why SOG hasn’t updated their design.
Also, I can’t seem to get the scissors to lock in the open position unless I unfold and refold the rest of the tools in the same handle 2-3 times. This is probably just a defect in my specific tool, but…I dunno. Overall the PowerLock seems like a great 1990’s multitool, but nowadays it feels very dated.
On the plus side, it’s making me appreciate the design of my Victorinox SwissTool X a lot more. That tool still has the personality of a blank sheet of paper, but the tools don’t stick together, everything locks and unlocks smoothly, and I can access all the tools while the handles are closed.
