KeymasterI have a dumb phone. I like it. I use a phone to make calls. I hate to text, but more and more people rely on that, and my dumb phone doesn’t receive all messages. Sometimes I get a blank screen.
I have a phone plan through Triple A. Month to month, no contract, flat rate and all I need. But now I am thinking I should get a smart phone. The company offers iPhone 4 and 5c and 5s at a reduced rate. I know they are no longer sold, but I would be using it JUST for calls and texting. I have an iPad for everything else.
So, thoughts on one over the other? Probably don’t need a lot of Gigs either as I use the iPad for the web. I know I could get the 7 if I go through the company that shall not be named, but I don’t want a contract.
Thanks in advance!September 29, 2025 at 11:10 am #27636admin
KeymasterWell I don’t really know what you need or want exactly but if you like the iPad but can not carry it around everywhere then you should love the iPhone as it is really just a shrunken version of the iPad mostly.
I have had the 3,4,5,6 & now 7 and I like the added speed and screen quality of each generation for sure but they also remove things for no good reason that I can tell that you might find to be an advantage in the older models?
I use mine a lot and for a lot of different things and find new ways every day too but I also detest messaging and tell people that if they want to make sure they do not reach me Texting is the best way to do so.
On the other hand it is handy beyond description at times too.
Buy as high up as you want to afford and do not look back!

KeymasterThe iPhone 5s is built better (according to quick skim of review / comparo sites), metal instead of the plastic of the 5c. Dunno about the 4, it’s even older right? That one depends on how much money you want to save vs the phone’s service life (assuming the 5s would get updates longer). Buying the phone through Triple A, what do they charge and which carrier’s service do they piggyback on?
You might be able to save a bit more by buying the phone of your choice off a site like Swappa, as long as it’s unlocked and supports Triple A’s service provider. I’ve used Swappa a few times in the past myself, and been happy with my purchases, so that’s not just a random suggestion.

KeymasterTriple A uses Verizon (there, I named that which shouldn’t be named). I can get a 5s with 16gb for 199.99, paid up front. Plan for $45 gets me unlimited everything. I could get unlimited text and 2gb and 3000 voice for $35. Verizon unlimited is $80. I don’t think I have the option of bringing my own phone to Triple A. If I did bring one to Verizon, Verizon 3gb is $40/mo on the prepaid route. So the better deal is always Triple A, but the phone is older, so will it last? I don’t do upgrades on a whim. Just need something that will get texts from other smart phones.

KeymasterThe 5S is still supported but is the next iPhone to reach of end of support. The 5S supports FaceTime which i only use for family group calls.
My niece uses a hand me down 4S which has no iOS support and limited apps. It does everything she needs for her Cricket plan. She pays 100%. The phone was free to her.

KeymasterSo if it is obsolete, it will still work for text and calls, right? My iPad is for surfing, checking in clients, etc. I don’t really care about bells and whistles on the phone as long as it works.

KeymasterYes. A phone without iOS support will receive emails, texts and calls. The 5S is still supported by Apple

KeymasterAll iPhones will work for what you are asking to do but the more recent iOS are not supported all the way back into the older models which might not matter anyway to you?

I would just buy the newest version that you can afford and keep going though, you will not regret some newer features that you can not even imagine until trying! As one example I just went to the 7 from a 6 and now can not imagine living without the WiFi calling feature for all this time!?!?
I will not Facetime in general but it can come in really handy at times too and there are truly useful upgrades sprinkled in with all of the useless to me crap in each new version that could be useful to you for sure.
I understand about not wanting a contract and there are used phones all over the place pretty cheap too, just make sure to check that they are free to be used in advance and that they seem free from abuse overall.
I use mine in pretty harsh environments in construction all the time and I have yet to kill one really and am pretty confident that as long as I take care of mine it will take care of me!

KeymasterDon’t get the 4. I have one and literally not a single app will install on it without trickery because it runs ios7 and cannot be upgraded beyond that.

KeymasterThanks for all the input! Think I am going to stay with my provider (no contract, cheaper price) and get the 5s. Again, iPad can do the rest that I need, and I carry it around with me at all times, so…:)

KeymasterI have a couple 5c’s that have held up well. I use one of the 5c’s for my Gaia app / GPS. The 5c is a good phone. I also have a couple 6s plus that are my current phones. The SE is a killer phone, my company switched over to the SE and I wish I had not requested a 6s plus and went with the SE instead . The 7 is not anything special as far as I can see… may have the company buy me an 8 … we will see. Overall I like the 5c can’t go wrong with that phone.

KeymasterSeveral prepaid companies such as Cricket, AT&T Go Phone and Boost have been offering the SE for $199.

KeymasterI am not sure, but I think the iPhone 5 is LTE and 3G and the iPhone 4 is a 3G only. May not be a signal issue, but it seems 3G shortens the battery standby time. I may be wrong, but that’s what I recall.

KeymasterSee, I looked at the SE, and thought it would be great, but when I went to Cricket, I couldn’t find it. “That page is missing.” Would be perfect.

KeymasterYou will probably need to check the local Cricket store or Best Buy or Target. The new SE priced at $199 is a bargain compared to the used prices of the other iphones listed in this thread.
