Well, after all the loving words written about the Parker Jotter (and even my own experiences as a pre-teen), I had to go out and get one to see if all the hype was real.

After a one day road test – Summary: Rank 0-1 out of 10 points. Seriously.

The Parker ink cartridge is awful. It’s less than a zero even. If the pen sits for longer than an hour you have to scribble with it to start the ink. When it does finally decide to write the line weight is terrible, uneven and has gaps. I bought a Parker refill along with the pen just in case the cartridge in the pen was old (even though the pen was new). The Parker refill cartridge was worse than the one that came with the pen! (I tried both). I must have cussed at this pen 25 times today. In fact, I cussed at it every single time I used it for one reason or another (usually because it wouldn’t write).

I’d gotten the stainless model (really just because that was all they had). It has a nice design on the top portion.

Not only will this pen not EDC with me, it’s likely going in the trash. I somewhat like the pen body itself, but if the OEM ink cartridges are worse than anything I’ve used in the last 10 years I’m certainly not going to waste any of my time trying to make the pen body work because it’s not that great either. Action feels cheap, weight is light (cheap). Heck, I’ve gotten pens at trade shows I like better (and if that isn’t a slap in Parker’s face I don’t know what is!!)

Sadly, I also have a pen and pencil set on order, and I doubt that will even leave the box. How very disappointing! And I was so looking forward to re-kindling an enjoyable experience I’d had with a pen when I was a kid.

Maybe I’m being too hard on it. Maybe I should try another cartridge and give it another chance. Maybe I’m just extra-grumpy tonight (grumpy-er than normal), I don’t know. I do know I don’t have time to waste on stupid stuff, and first impressions are important.

I guess I’ll wait until the morning to toss it in the bin. If I still feel this way, in the bin it goes.
