KeymasterI will more than likely be getting a new gun for my birthday! Right now I have a Gen2 Glock 19 that I do not carry EDC, mostly because I’m not licensed to do so in my home state. I’m looking for advice and opinions on firearms to “try on” as well as any thoughts you guys might have regarding how to choose a secaondary firearm. I’m also starting to look into getting started in competitive shooting in the IDPA, so that is another consideration in choosing a new weapon.
Right now I’m looking at a few different weapons:
Another Glock, probably a 26, to complement my current handgun.
A 1911 model of some sort.
A Sig P226/229.
A Kahr K9 or CW9.
Or, possibly sticking with just my Glock 19 and getting a Remington 870 shotgun for home defense. My thoughts on the Glock 26 is that it would make a much more effective EDC gun since it’s considerably smaller than the 19 I currently have. That has been my main comlaint with the 19 – that it is a little bulky to wear every day, and it can be difficult to conceal, especially in Florida during the summer when we like to wear as little as possible. Also, this gun would fit in with the “system” I have right now, since the magazines from my 19 are compatible with it. Additionally, I’m also considering getting a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 carbine, which you can get in a model that accepts Glock magazines, meaning that all my firearms would then take the same ammo and magazines. Downside is that the 26 has not a lot of grip and so it can be a little difficult to control, making it less useful in competition.
The Sig is appealing just because it’s a
fine gun. Problem with this is that even the P229 is about the same size as my Glock 19, which means that it’ll have the same issues with EDC as the Glock.
The 1911 is something that I’ve always just straight up liked. It’s an iconic weapon and a quality firearm. Problem here is that they’re generally even bigger than the Glock. Benefits are that I can use it in competition in IDPA across three divisions.
Kahr – these guns are small, and slimmer than the Glock 26, which means they might be a feasible pocket gun, which is a good thing here in Florida, seeing as a belt and holster and concealing garment gets uncomfortable in 90+ degree heat. Another Kahr option is the CW380, which is *definitely* a pocket-sized gun.
Shotgun? Well, this wouldn’t be any good in competition, but having something like this around the house would be a good thing, generally speaking.
Thoughts? Anybody have experience with any of these firearms?
Thanks in advance!
