I’m really debating getting a notebook cover, but I have some conflicting philosophical thoughts on them and would like to get some input.

I carry a couple different kinds of EDC notebooks. One is just an el-cheapo dollar store small composition book I use for notes of all flavors. The other is a 4×6 RiR flip top ‘reporter’ style notebook. This is the one I am conflicted on. Right now I carry it sans cover, ‘in the nude’, ‘Au-natural’ :D if you will.

On the one hand, I think a nice cover would be really cool, and I like the idea of having a place to store stuff like pens and pencils, etc). (love the idea actually). I also like the idea of adding a little protection to the notebook itself as this notebook truly is a ‘field notes’ notebook. Plus, I’m also a nut about pens and pencils, so I’ve got to have a million flavors of those!

On the other hand, I have the following considerations…

    • Much like a bigger pack, if you buy it, you absolutely will find stuff to put in it! (i.e. all manner of EDC stuff you just gotta’ have…you know). Note – BTW, I call this the “Flat Surface Syndrome” – If you have an open flat surface, you will find something to set down on it.
    • A cover takes up more room (quite a bit more actually) which means it doesn’t fit as nicely now in a courier bag, pack or pocket. At minimum it takes up more room if it does fit in a bag or pack.
    • More bulk means less convenience, which means less EDC, which means more likely to have that important entry left out, which means less utility.
    • I take some pride in doing more with less and trying to strip down to only what is required (not me personally ‘stripping’, mind you! :DOh, the horror!)

Okay, so now you’ve heard my peace. I’m up here on the ledge…talk me down! :D
