I few weekends ago, I was asked by a former colleague to accompany her in a private seminar on defense techniques from a knife attack.

When it was my time to participate one-on-one with the instructor, I kept moving away from him maintaining at least a 6-8 feet distance. He asked me to stay still so he could teach me the “moves.” I asked him why I needed to stay still in the classroom since that is NOT what I was going to do in a real-life situation. He said I needed to stay still so that he could demonstrate what to do in the event of a real attack. I stood still and when he lunged at me with the hard foam facsimile of the knife, I picked-up a folding chair as a defense. To his credit, he stated that a classroom folding chair would not be on the street. I suggested that we go in the alley outside.

He repeated the drill and I picked-up a scrap 1 x 2 and kept moving to maintain that 6-8 feet distance. He said that he couldn’t teach me the move cuz he “…couldn’t reach me.” I smiled at him and at that point, he finally realized the message that I was trying to convey.
