KeymasterIt was in this very forum that I first noticed the knife, this thread is about.
Olfa was unknown to me, but as it seems, the founder of Olfa Company invented the world’s first Snap-Off Blade Cutter and set a standard. I do believe that and will surely buy some of there rotary and regular cutters.
But the Craft Knives 34B and 26B (or CK-1 and CK-2) caught my attention directly. As I did nowhere find a thread exclusively about them, here it is.The CK-1 and CK-2 may be worth taking a look at – especially for craftsmen with aesthetic sensibility.
The CK-1 with the black body is equipped with a blade which has two edges of which one is at all times stored inside the handle. Steel grade ist non-stainless. The bigger CK-2 features a normal Kiridashi blade in stainless. Unfortunately I don’t have further informations to the exact steels used, may be SK-5 and some sort of AUS? I don’t know. If anybody does…Both blades are retractable (via knurled screws) and were perfectly sharp. They may be sharpened with regular stones and sharpening devices should they show wear.
With a Kiridashi style blade you get a straight edge which makes precise and very controlled cutting and whittling possible.
At the same time it enables cutting on a plane surface better than with other straight edge designs like Wharncliffe and Sheepsfoot.
The acute-angled and sharp tip makes scribing an easy task. Both knives feature kind of a 2/3 – 1/3 flat V-grind, but the very edge is set only from the right side, apparently with around 30° degrees.
It was only later that I found out that these knives are available from German sellers. But then I had already ordered them at a selling platform in Japan from seller cacaomarvelous. But I did not regret that at all, as I love getting letters from Japan. And the price was not higher than from German sellers who would have charged shipping costs. A personal note from Mr. Fukumura which accompanied the shipment was very kind. And I like the Japanese packaging of the knives too. It gives some international flair to my small office in rural Bavaria 😉
