So tonight I have this collection of just random EDC thoughts for today. Probably all of the are worthy of a post individually, but I’m too lazy right now (tired after a long day). There is no particular order to these thoughts, and I guess they carry about the same weight (at least tonight anyway). Hopefully some of these will prompt further discussion and we’ll go from there I guess.

Personal Towels – I did make a post earlier about a nice small towel I can carry with me, super absorbent, ultra fast drying and way light (so not much more on that other than the concept). I usually carry a nice handkerchief in a pocket, and a bandana (or three) in my EDC gear, but I can’t count how many times I’ve needed to use a towel to dry myself or something else off. As light as some of these high tech towels are there isn’t really any weight penalty by carrying one, but they can really save the day / moment in a time of need (more often than not).

EDC ‘carry’ – Over the past few months I’ve made a number of modifications to my ED ‘carry’. My old mindset used to be one of ‘carry everything from my office back and forth’. Over time I’ve realized half of the stuff I carried home I never used. Now my EDC has turned around the other direction; I carry things which make life more comfortable throughout the day. I guess part of the learning curve of EDC is carrying things you use, use often, and things which make the day a little easier / better. Call them “comfort” items if you will. Rarely did I ever carry clothing items, or snacks, etc. It was all business (two laptops, multiple external drives, all manner of cables, paperwork and books). It was an epic load, but why? Now I carry a few snacks, some water, maybe some sleevettes of instant coffee, a nice thin insulated shirt, gloves, some personal items and some music to enjoy on my travels. Oh sure, I still take a paper or two home as needed, but not my whole office. My load is lighter, and everything works for me (not the other way around).

Scissors – I’ve become very fond of this tool, probably the most used tool I carry (next to a light maybe). I collect knives (don’t we all), but I can’t carry them (or firearms) to work. Scissors fit the bill really well. Most all of the things I need a knife for scissors will fit the bill more than nicely. I am able to carry a small original SAK and it has scissors, and I found myself using them always. Then I bought a LM Micra (but I lost it after a year or so). Never was I so lost without a tool as that one. I recently purchased a LM CS (TSA friendly) and a small Gerber tool with primary scissors. I hope they do well.

Fountain Pens – Pens to me are like watches, I can’t leave the house without one. I am an absolute NUT about pens, pencils and paper (and watches). I love them all. Oddly, I love different kinds of ink, but only a couple of colors. I never write in red (even though it is my favorite color), and my primary ink colors are grey, blue, browns and some greens. As a younger man I would have never dreamed there would be so many different shades of ‘grey’. I think grey is one of my favorites. I must have 25 different shades of grey ink. To me, grey is an enigma; it can take on green hues, brown hues, purple hues and everything in between. As pens go, I like nice writing instruments, but I don’t go crazy-expensive. My favorites are TWSBI, LAMY and I really like the Pilot Metro’s as an all-around pen. Nothing too expensive, but they write nice and I like them.

Preparedness – As an old Boy Scout, I like to be prepared for whatever happens during the day. To me, nothing is more rewarding than running into a problem and having just the thing to deal with it. It’s not about building a thermo-nuclear warhead from a paperclip and a battery, but rather having a band-aid when someone (myself usually) gets cut, or a wet-wipe to deal with getting splooged with something…or eyedrops, or a Tylenol, or..or..or. Just having a simple spork to eat something and not have to use a crummy plastic thing which breaks is nice. A hat when it’s cold or a nice warm drink late at night after everything is closed. Those things are rewarding.

I could go on, but I’ve bored you all long enough.

    Until next time…enjoy.
