Recommendation for a beginner?

Just wondering if anybody can help out with a gun recommendation. My dad recently bought a handgun and he’s going to teach me how to shoot when I visit for Christmas, and I would like to do some research into buying a gun that would suit my needs. There was recently a quadruple homicide in my town and I live in a shady part of town so I’ve started to become concerned for my safety as I sometimes have to walk to work in the middle of the night.

I’m a 5’4″ girl with tiny hands, and the handgun would be carried mostly in my bag, but I still want to be able to go without the bag and not have it be obvious that I’m carrying a gun.
