Removing Rust from Weapons

Hi,

I recently unearthed my dads old air rifle on my parents attic. The mechanic still works fine, but there is a light coating of rust on parts of the rifle.

Are there good ways to remove the rust without damaging the surface too much? I already coated the metal parts with a liberal amount of ballistol and let it soak in for a while before rubbing off as much of the rust as possible but I am afraid I will have to use harsher methods to get rid of it all…
