Backblaze, a cloud backup company, regularly publishes statistics showing failure rates of the hard drives in their server farms. The short of the Q1 2016 report is that the most reliable drives are from HGST (was Hitachi, now owned by WD), with WD falling behind Seagate for the first time in three years.
@Piester: Didn’t know that. Not real surprised; I remember when the HD industry segment for PC’s was just starting… I used to work for a company that was a supplier to both of them. But I lost track of the players!
Regardless of whether Seagate did buy WD or not, for a long time for most of us performance differences were too small to matter. I’d say in this instance your determining factor will be price.
