KeymasterWell, I broke my habit of only buying Leatherman multi-tools recently. Up until now I was a diehard Leatherman fan, never wanted anything else, only looked at other tool brands to either laugh at them or wonder why Leatherman didn’t have some equivalent tool capabilities (in the case of the Swisstool’s chisel/scraper).
The PST would be perfect for me, I thought. Small, light, compact, capable, durable. Everything I wanted and nothing I didn’t in a package that I might actually start carrying on-person again. One large issue- it’s been discontinued for over a decade, which means that the tools that are out there are usually pretty beat up and can’t easily be serviced or repaired- supposedly Leatherman is giving people Rebars in place of broken PSTs. I’m sure the Rebar is a fine tool, but I wanted the PST, not a shrunken ST300. Time to find an equivalent that was still being made.
After a little researching, I found out that the SOG Pocket Power Plier was the only quality PST equivalent left on the market. It has roughly the same form factor, losing only a large flathead screwdriver (assuming you don’t use the end of the file as a screwdriver, for which it’s ground) and is, most importantly, not only user-serviceable with normal hex wrenches and parts bought from SOG, and is still being made (and will be repaired/replaced, should I need the warranty, with another tool of the same model). I’m loving this tool. I haven’t put it through its paces just yet, but I’m very impressed… I think my next tool will be a SOG as well.I haven’t seen much in the way of SOG in this forum. Who else here has or had a SOG multi-tool? Any experiences to share? Any stories of abuse and triumph or catastrophic failure?
Anyone here save SOG tools for those jobs that you don’t want to mess up your Leatherman doing?
