    My history:

I’ve always been into cool knives. In highschool I built 3 gas forges and on 25 ton hydraulic press for knife making. I focused solely on crafting fixed blades, however, I’ve always appreciated a good knife. Growing up I’ve “tested” may a knife. On my path to eagle in the scouts I went though Gerbers, Bucks and Kershaws. I graduated college 2.5 years ago in engineering. It was after my graduation, and new found income, that I stumbled upon SOG knives.

    SOG Mini X-Ray Vision (MXV72):

This was my first SOG. I enjoyed the quality of the knife, however, I found some major pit falls of the X-Ray Vision tanto.

    Pros:

1.) The Japanese steel rocks. This thing can hold an edge for a long time.
2.) “Ride” – I love how this knife (and other SOGs) sit in the pocket. It took some time getting used to the clip being on the back (butt) of the knife, however, I’ve come to love it. It makes “drawing” the knife a breeze.
3.) The locking mechanism rocks! Easy to use with one hand and rock solid.

    Cons:

1.) The clip flat out sucks. I’ve broken 2 of these clips so far, and had to send for a new one. The issue is that the clip protrudes farther from the body than most clips. To SOGs credit they do send new clips for free.
2.) This is minor – The coating – On my X-ray I’ve seen tinny rust spots. This wouldn’t have happened if I oiled the blade regularly. This knife was an every day thrasher for me.
3.) The tanto, serrated blade. THIS IS PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I just don’t like the tanto and serrated. I like one or the other… or both.

SOG Vulcan Mini Knife w/ Strait Edge (VL02-CP):

This was my second SOG… I love this knife. This guy is one of the best knives I’ve ever owned.

    Pros:

1.) Once again the Japanese blade does not disapoint. This things holds a hell of an edge.
2.) The strait edged, 3in blade is a joy to use. It’s sharp as a razor and a smooth operator.
    3.) The finish is flawless.
4.) The “Heft” of this knife is great for guys with large hands like myself. It has a strong presence in your hand during use.
5.) Like the X-Ray I love the locking mechanism.

    Cons

1.) I haven’t broken a clip on this guy yet, however, it seems to have some of the same design flaws as the X-ray. In my opinion. Time will tell.

    Summery:

In conclusion both of these are excellent knifes. The Vulcan fits my liking better than the X-Ray. It not only fits in my hand better, but it is also easier to use as an EDC in my opinion. Right now I EDC the Vulcan and the X-Ray rides in my Rush 24. I hope this will be useful for anyone looking to buy one of these guys.

Note in these pictures a new clip for my X-Ray was in the mail. It has arrived and works well in my bag.
