I’ve had a bit of experience with solar powered watches; I’ve had two of them.

I like the concept. I’ve never had any issue with them becoming charged or anything like that.

One of my two solars is a Casio with a decidedly ‘retro’ design. It is digital; the ‘face’ is sort of divided horizontally into a top half and a bottom half. Top half is taken up by early style solar cell; bottom half is the digital display.

The other solar watch is (was — more later) a Seiko analog solar. Analog solars apparently have an entire solar cell below the face of the watch if my understanding is correct.

The Casio literally never fails me. Never had a problem with it. On the other hand, even during charging I have sometimes found the hands on the Seiko to seize up. For what its worth, I’ve seen similar comments by reviewers of analog solars (not any particular manufacturer) on Amazon.

I am guessing that the analog mechanism needs more stored power to ensure the hands move; and consumes more. Digitals are simply changing the charge on a LCD display… Now, I realize the hands are not of any significant mass, and I realize that by design all of this ‘should’ have been taken into account.

My question, my fellow watch nerds, is simply have any of you observed that the analog solars are more susceptible to failure as I’ve described?

I finally got fed up and trashed my Seiko solar today when this happened for the umpteenth time!

Looking forward to your observations — it may play a role in my next watch purchase!

    L’chaim!
