Spock’s boonie

In the Star Trek episode “Assignment: Earth”, the Enterprise is sent back to 1968 Earth on an observation mission. They intercept an alien transporter beam and h*ll nearly ensues. Also Teri Garr.

But that’s not what I’m here to talk to you about tonight. Instead, it’s this boonie hat that Mr. Spock seems to be wearing as part of his 20th-century disguise, to cover his ears.

Is that in fact a boonie, or would you classify it as something more like a fedora? It doesn’t make sense to wear a boonie with a business suit, but maybe that’s part of the comedy of this episode — of which there is a fair amount. Then again, a fedora might not cover his ears.

If you have Netflix, I believe “Assignment: Earth” is episode 55 in their classic Trek videos. Spock starts wearing the boonie (?) about 31 minutes into the episode. Earlier, Spock wears something like a longshoreman’s hat…
