A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
I went with a friend to my high school’s rifle team practice one day. Yeah….

As a competitive person, competitive shooting definitely interests me…

But as a competitive person, I’m also fully aware of how quickly things get CRAZY EXPENSIVE when competing.
It definitely can. But, there are ways to minimize it. Ammo is going to be the largest expense.

Open guns can get really expensive…these are the F1, the top fuel dragsters, etc….big compensators, 30 round magazines, and frame-mounted dot sights shooting hand-loaded ammo (because factory ammo isn’t hot enough). You can do it cheap, like I do, and just shoot an m&p core with a slide-mounted dot…at a serious disadvantage…open guns feel like .22s, so my weaker, more harshly scored ported 9 is significantly slower and harder to shoot.

But one of the bigger glocks, XDs, or CZs makes a great gun for limited or limited 10 (in .40) or production (9mm).

When you’re starting, though….run what you have. You won’t win with a g43 or an xd-s, and you kind of need several 8-round mags. But you can do it. And you’ll learn.

Seriously, it’s a lot of fun and will teach you a lot. If nothing else, the timer creates a minor adrenaline dump that you have to work through, and you will have to figure out all the things writers harp on about….moving targets, shooting while moving, reloading while moving, explosive motion, malfunction clearance…all under time pressure.

    I’m a huge proponent.

As far as competitions go IDPA is pretty cheap. I shoot a mostly stock G17 (connector, fluff and buff and hi viz front sight). Ammo is the new tires lol.

There are a few places that hold them regularly in MA (I’m shooting on on Sat 12/05). There are a few clubs that hold practices (and have no problem with new people and non members). Most of these are with good people and newbies are welcome (SAFETY is what counts!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

    Good for you!

Hopefully it is good quality training and not the get ’em get ’em out supposed to be 8hrs with 4 hrs of range time (which is not nearly enough as it is) but is really like 5 hrs class and 1hr range, for the whole class.

That is how my class was and I really feel for those poor souls who went in with little to no knowledge… When my wife took her class I believe it was three 8 hour classes on consecutive Saturdays, she learned a lot which went a long way to her feeling comfortable carrying and shooting.
Well, it’s actually just a 4 hour class, including range time unfortunately…
It’s the basic course through www. massfirearmsschool .com if you’d like to check it out.

I’ve never taken a class there. But have shot there a lot! Good place to shoot and try out some guns. Almost went there last night.

Please remember this if nothing else, do not trust them on the MASS laws 100%!!!!! This is not a dig at them, the laws here are VERY confusing, and I know for a fact that a lot of instructors (and gunshops and friends and cops and….) do not know the laws as well as they should. I’m still amazed at all the wrong info I hear. Not saying I’m an expert, but have been shooting in ma for a long time.

PM me if you’d like with any questions.

Okay, good to know. Thanks for the insight & the help. Luckily I have a good handful of reasonable & informed friends to guide me along the way 🙂

I”ll be sure to PM ya if I have any questions, though. Appreciate the offer.

Connecticut here, I kept putting it off but I’m glad I have it now.. I don’t carry every waking moment but I’m glad I have the choice.

Here’s the bottom line for me and your mileage may vary.
There is too much “bad” in this world now. Any honest cop will tell you they can’t protect us all, all of the time. It is my responsibility to protect me and my family. Therefore, I am prepared (and continue to prepare) so that I can protect if/when the time comes. I believe it is my responsibility.

With that said, until the last year I have not carried daily. My employment prevented it. But that has changed. If I leave the house, I’m armed. I’m not going to shoot someone robbing a store as long as they don’t present bodily harm. Money and goods can be replaced. But I will protect my neighbors lives if I can.

If WE don’t protect us, no one else will in most cases. That’s not a dig on police at all. I greatly respect law enforcement. I just know that there are limited numbers of them and many more bad guys…

It may come to US taking up arms to defend this country. I can’t do that if I don’t prepare. If I go out of the house and don’t have my pocket flashlight, I’m inconvenienced. If I go out of the house and can’t protect myself or my family – I’m dead. If you are going to prepare for anything, prepare to protect yourself, your family and your country.

    I’ll shut up now. 🙂
