I know I read here somewhere recent about a shoe company who make steel toe boots and shoes with WIDE toes, but I can’t remember where I read about it. I’m going back into a job where steel toes are needed, and I’m always looking for the best boots I can get.
What I need are very very wide toe boxes. When you look at a typical boot width, that width is usually measured at the “knuckles” of your foot rather than at the ends of your toes. I have Fred Flintstone toes and when I walk they spread out a lot. This makes steel toes incredibly uncomfortable because my big toe jams into the side really hard when I step.
Right now I’m wearing Hytest Footrest boots, which so far have been the best steel toe boots I’ve ever had on my feet. I wouldn’t be unhappy buying another pair, but I also wouldn’t mind checking out other options. In the end the toe box is the most important thing, even more important than quality (yes I’m serious). If I find a pair of boots that are really comfortable but fall apart in 6 months, I don’t even care and I’ll keep buying new pairs to be able to live with the steel toe.
Right off the top of the list we can rule out Dr. Martins. I already have a pair of their steel toes and they make me wanna cut my toes off. I’ve also tried everything that Red Wing sell with no luck (which sucks because I love my Red Wings).
