I am pretty consistently amazed at the high quality of the modern dissposable objects. Razors, lighters, pens. BIC products in particular. Today I found a pen.

We, the better half and I and sister in law and her hubby, were all out on our Vespa motorscooters for a ride. We’d been cruising some country roads and I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. C
Rather than pull over on a road with no shoulder, I kept riding until we got to a small town, and I pulled into the gravel and dirt parking lot of a contrctin company, cut the motor and took out my phoneto see who was trying to get a hold of me. While I was talking, I glance down and see some blue plastic half buried in the damp gravel and dirt. It’s pushed down in the dirt in the middleof a truck tire track from being run over. I reach down and pull out a BIC clicky pen with the name and number of a local roofing contractor on it. I wipe it off and try it on the back of a map from the glove box of the scooter. It wrote perfectly. Smooth black line of ink lays out as I sign my name. I drop it in my pocket and we ride on. Later, I make out a check with it, and it writes just fine.

A cheap pen, pulled from the dirt, still writes. Fancy pens are nice, but those cheap BIC’s are a heck of a pen for a few pennies. It’s clipped in my pocket as I type, with about half of the ink still in it. I’m curious to see how long it will go.
