KeymasterHey guys/gals, I know there are a ton of threads about the Rush 12 and Rush 24 (and some truly fine reviews), but I am still in something of a quandary. I am looking for something for EDC. I currently use an old STM Scout messenger but it is getting worn out and the capacity no longer suits my needs.
So we come to replacements. I have decided – somewhat arbitrarily – to return to the world of backpacks. Having read as many threads as humanly possible – here and elsewhere – I have (like many others) narrowed it down to the Rush 12/24. As an aside I have access to both at the same price point so cost should not be a factor in this decision.
My daily carry includes/will include:
a MaxP Fatty moderately stuffed with essential tools and stuff
a small first responder kit
a Midori Traveler’s Notebook
a pen roll with half a dozen pens and drawing pencils
an old (2004!) Nikon digital camera (waiting to get a better one) in a LowePro case
hat
gloves
change of clothes but not shoes
a Collins Mandarin/English dictionary
a pair of 2 inch diam solid Picasso jasper Baoding balls (these are much better than the chimers)
a 4 inch Sil-X contact ball
a small lunch box
pocket rain jacket/poncho (as a spare)Additional to this it may/is likely to include at least:
two more textbooks
one or two other books
A couple of A4 pads
A 3 ring binder
a jacket – either goretex or softshell, depending on season etc, maybe both.
polypro thermals
small food items – granola bars type of thing
AudioTechnica M50s
sundry other items – buff, bandana and so on.The backpack is to be used for work stuff, University coursework stuff, and as a GHB. As I am in an urban environment I do not need to carry shelter. And of course we are not allowed to carry a sidearm here either!
I stand 6′ 2″ and am of average build.
At home I have Berghaus Spirit 70+15 that is my BOB. Actually had that pack for years and it has served me well all over the world, and is still in fantastic condition. Unexpectedly found a SAK – Huntsman I think – in one of the pockets today… score!
Anywho, to the task at hand, choosing the Rush 12 or 24. Either would probably suit me quite well. What concerns me is future change. By this I mean that is it worth getting the 24 now, even if it is a bit big for current needs, with the thought that I may need this space in the future? Bear in mind that I am not in a position to buy multiple bags.
Also, concerning the front pouches of these Rush bags: I realise that some may question why I do not offload the Fatty and FAK into them. However, I want the FAK to be removable as one piece – probably going for a Rip-Away or some such – and I am considering hooking up a sling to the Fatty as ‘murse’ for if I leave the pack in my office.
Comments/suggestions?
/sorry long post from a forum noob!
