Hunting season is on us here in GA, and I’m missing the fact that I havn’t hunted for a while now.
I love to shoot bolt actions, and I’ve been lucky enough to own a few, build a few, and sell a few, over the years.
So a few years ago, I started to think about building a rifle, specifically for deer and varmint hunting in the GA woods. A .243, with 16.5 or 18 inch barrel. Preferable a Rem 700, as I really like that platform. Topped off with a 1.5-5×20 Leupold. This rifle will be as short, and light as possible, for navigating and hiking through bush.
Then, I walked into my local pawn shop yesterday… Fatal.
Someone had brought in a Remington 700 CDL in .243, topped off with a Leupold VX-II 3-9 X Something-or-other.
This reminded me of the idea I’d had a few years ago, for that woods/varmint rifle.
And so… Tomorrow I pick up this new project.
The older Remington trigger will be adjusted down in pull weight.
Barrel will be cut and re crowned, from 22 inches to 16.5 or 18.
I’ll either have the wood stock trimmed in the forearm and recontoured, or replace it with light synthetic stock. Haven’t decided yet, as I like wood on a rifle.
I figure I can still kick out a 95 grain projectile at 3000 fps, and if I don’t hit the target, it’ll be blinded by the muzzle flash
Giving me time to jump up and beat it to death with a stick.
