In the middle of the night as I headed out, I grabbed what I thought was my CRK Small Sebbie. It wasn’t. Too late to go back to the house to get the Sebbie, I settled for what I had: a Gerber of some sort.

I clipped the folder in my trouser pocket and went on my merry way. Hours later, I needed to retrieve some coins at the bottom of the same pocket as where I had clipped the folder. I managed to get the coins; however, as I quickly moved my hand out of the pocket, I felt a stinging sensation.

I looked at my hand just rear of my pinky and discovered a three-inch gash now trickling blood.

The tip-down folder’s blade had moved out of the scales and the tip was now exposed.

This is the pitfall of tip-down carry; one that has NEVER been an issue in the 2.5 decades that I have been carrying folding knives clipped to my trouser pocket.

This occurred because there is no detent, by design or happenstance, to keep the blade tip secured. The blade’s spine is free to move into the open cavity of the pocket area. Had this folder been tip-up carry, the spine of the blade would rest against the edge of the pocket where movement would be minimized.

This is no diatribe of the Gerber product or tip-down carry; just commentary on a lesson learned. It is a lesson that is completely unrelated to the context of this post.
