KeymasterI picked up The Move pen recently, used condition, titanium version and I finally got around to test it a bit. I have been carrying the titanium Valiant concepts pen on my keychain almost every day for the past two years or longer and I was curious how they would compare.
The Move is longer and quite a bit chunkier than the Valiant Concepts which makes it more noticeable on the keychain but it makes it easier to write with it at the same time. The Valiant Concepts pen is more of an emergency pen. Not very comfortable to write with but it’s always with you, you barely notice it until you need it.
The opening mechanisms are very different of course but both work well on the keychain. The Move is a bolt action pen with a rather stiff bolt mechanism. It’s not as much fun to play with it as with the Tibolt but at least it doesn’t open easily in your pocket. It has a screw cap on the tip to enter the refill that is secured with an o-ring. I find it quite difficult to take it off but I prefer that over losing the cap because it comes loose by itself. To write with the Valiant Concepts pen you screw in the back part, which is also secured with an o-ring. It is surprisingly safe and has never come apart inside my pocket over the past two years.Overall the Move looks better and is a better pen but since I have a full-size pen with me most of the time the Valiant Concepts pen is the better back-up for me. The biggest advantage of the Move is actually that it uses a more common Lamy M22 refill while the Valiant Concepts pen needs a special Fisher refill, that is just made for this pen and will likely not be available forever. I think there will soon be a titanium TEC pico pen which is certainly also an interesting alternative but I’m not so sure how I feel about the magnetic cap mechanism.
