Any specific suggestions as to a basic first aid class?

I took a four-hour American Red Cross class last year. No offense to those here who work with ARC (it might have been the particular instructor), but that class left me with more questions than I had going in. Out of the seven people in the class that evening, I was the only one there voluntarily. Everyone else needed the certification for their jobs, which meant that no one (besides myself) asked any questions or for clearer explanations. They sat, listened, took the test, and left with their cards.

I already know how to dial 911. My concern was: What do I do if help isn’t coming anytime soon?

Maybe a wilderness first aid class might be more along the lines of what I was looking for. I’ll probably try to find one when the weather gets too cold to be outside.
