I know this is probably the wrong place to ask, but most of the forums I’ve seen actually on topic are focused on more advanced topics.

If anyone has any experience, I’d love a bit of advice.

I’m looking to get into the sport strictly as a hobby. I used to complete at Olympic Rifle, but it’s been about 10 years since I’ve shot competitively. I wasn’t something I can do to have fun without it consuming my life. I originally quit after the ’04 Olympic team selection match after I realized that I’d have a shot at the ’08 games…. If I trained 30 hours a week, which wasn’t in the cards.

I’m mostly wondering which division to shoot. I know I don’t want to build a race gun right away, partially because I don’t want to take it that seriously and partially because no one shots open in the local matches that are convenient.

So, i’m thinking about single stack and production. Production would either be a walther p99 or h&k p30l or USP (all 9×19). I haven’t really liked any striker-fired pistols I’ve used, but Walter’s QA trigger seems pretty good. I wouldn’t be able to start with the h&k cocked and locked, so that first DA shot might be a pain. But I kind of like the feel of them better otherwise.

For SS, I’d either buy a (very) gently used (<100 rounds) custom built gun from a friend who’s active in the local club (he only competes at production now) or add a mag well, sights, and trigger job to something like a .45 Springfield RO. I was originally leaning towards this option because I like the 1911 triggers a LOT better.

That same friend is set up for reloading, so that’s not a huge deal at first…just add beer to the materials cost. I’m told reloading .45 is a lot more expensive than 9, but I don’t have any concrete numbers.

Also, I should mention that I own literally zero applicable equipment except general cleaning and lube supplies.

And, unfortunately, no one around really rents these pistols to compare, so I feel like I’d be buying blind. That kind of bit me in the butt when I got my free rifle years ago. It was a fine gun, but I would have bought something different if I’d gotten to try then out. All of these are like a third to half the price of my anschutz, but I’d rather not make a mistake.

    Any thoughts?

Also, this will just be a competition and “fun” purchase, no concessions to concealed carry.
