KeymasterPocketPacket looks interesting. I have a pair of Kenwood D710’s that I use for APRS. One in my Jeep and other as a base station. However we usually take the wife’s car for longer trips and having APRS via an iPhone/Baofeng setup might be worthwhile to setup.
I’d like to get my Dad setup with APRS too. He drives a goodly distance to visit once or twice a year and being able to see where he is would make things easier. Once he is in repeater range it matters a lot less obviously, but would still be nice to have.

KeymasterThe only issue is a cable. You have to make your own. It’s easy, but not elegant if you know what I mean. I am looking at another option with a mic/audio splitter and a 3.5mm to 2.5mm step down.

KeymasterIf you don’t have an Iphone, APRSDroid with a mobilinkD TNC works really well, I have this setup with a Baofeng UV-82 in my Cherokee.

KeymasterKE0JJG. At the tender age of 56, I figured it was finally time. I’m Technician only at this point, but I’m enjoying it so far.

KeymasterDoes anyone EDC hf communications? I have a KX2, thinking of bringing it in my EDC bag for opportunities I might have to operate.

KeymasterI have one small Pelican case with an 817,tuner,2m amp,Super Antenna and Miracle Whip along with everything else needed for QRP ops and another Pelican case with an Icom 7000 and all that it needs to run.
I also have a Buddi-Pole and knockdown Arrow Beam and other portable antennas ready to go with either of these as needed. Not sure I really EDC them but they are ready to go at all times.
As an example I was in Joplin 2 days after the Tornado running the SATERN HF nets on the 7000 and Buddi-Pole from the lawn of the Sal. Army branch there on battery all of which I assembled in 30 minutes before deploying to the scene.

KeymasterI’ve been a No Code Technician ham since 1994. I finally decided to upgrade to General and I started studying for the test this December. I also plan to upgrade from there to Extra Class sometime next year. I can’t afford any HF gear at the moment but I just wanted finally upgrade my license. Wish me good luck.
