KeymasterJust finished studying for my General ticket. I’m now taking practice exams and I’m consistently getting passing scores. Early next month is the exam session and I know I’ll be ready. Over 20 years I’ve been a no code Technician ham and I felt this is the time to upgrade. I am already planning to do my Extra Class upgrade at the end of the year. I’ve been using an app on my Android phone called Ham Test Prep and it is sweet. Easy to use and keeps track of what you know and don’t know. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.

Click to expand…Great news! I wish you well! Keep us posted on your progress. I might suggest while you are at the testing session, once you pass the General exam go ahead and take the Extra exam while you are there. Some VE’s will let you take all the exams that you can pass in one session at no additional charge. Good Luck!

KeymasterNorwegian HAM license since 1997. Have to admit there has been mostly radio silence for a decade now. Not likely to go all in again, but have been contemplating an antenna rig lately, this time around it will be more geared toward emergency preparedness. I’m not a prepper, but I’m increasingly worried about our reliance on technology and how vulnerable our society has become. And it’s an opportunity to refresh my skills as well.
I’ve decided to keep my call sign private for now, as a google search will provide my full name and address from the Norwegian communications authority’s database.
When I’m up and running, I will at least share by PM to those interested.September 26, 2025 at 8:43 am #25775admin
KeymasterI don’t remember if I posted in this thread before but I’m a Kentucky Extra.
I operated Field Day on two Slinkies soldered together with a UHF connector between them, stretched out they were resonant on 40 and 15 meters. So there are some interesting things you can do with antennas.

KeymasterHave my emergency comms kit put together. Yaesu VX-6R in a small Pelican case with charger, 2 rechargeable batteries and AA battery tray. Pouch holds Nelson Antennas Slim Jim J-Pole and throw-line kit (CountyComm Mini Grappling Hook without hooks attached, 30′ of 95lb tether cord).
Also got a Signal Stuff Super-Elastic Signal Stick flexible antenna made of Nitinol. Very impressed with the performance of both the Slim Jim and Signal Stick antennas.

I just got back from the VEC exam session and I am glad to say I passed Element 3 and now I am a General Class amateur radio operator. Happy, happy, happy!!! One of the VE asked if I wanted to take Element 4 for the Extra Class but I decided to wait to December and study more. I will be ready by the end of the year and my dream of having my Extra Class license will become reality.September 26, 2025 at 8:45 am #25793admin
