KeymasterI’ve done some searching and really haven’t found a good solid answer to this…
I’m considering buying a Bluetooth keyboard to pair with my Kindle Fire HD 7-inch. I’ve read positive reviews on several, so finding the keyboard won’t be the issue. CARRYING the keyboard will be another story.
This would be carried in a backpack. I don’t want to carry it loose for fear of breaking off keys, etc. Even a padded case doesn’t sound adequate, unless it was very padded.
Does anybody carry a keyboard in some kind of hard case — aluminum, maybe? Since I wouldn’t want a lot of wasted space, I’d like to find one that would fit the keyboard perfectly and then could be slid into the backpack without excess bulk.
Thanks.

KeymasterHmm, I don’t know about any hard cases, but my tablet’s case has one build onto it (it is detatchable).
I don’t think keys popping off should be too big of an issue with these keyboards, but if you don’t have something solid and sturdy to keep it in, I would think a hard case would be great. Only problem is I don’t know of any hard cases for tablet keyboards.January 23, 2026 at 2:15 pm #148227admin

KeymasterI carry a keyboard with me from time to time. Its a ‘proper’ mechanical one, so keys breaking of is less of an issue (cherry keys tend to pop off the stem instead of breaking and if one does break ill just replace the stem). Just throw it in a very snug fitting bag so there’s little chance of things catching on the keys from the side. Keys getting pressed down while you carry em should not be a problem.
Keyboards are bulky to carry around, hard cases make this worse. Dont buy those roll-up or low profile crappy keyboards. At that point you are better off with your touch-screen keyboard.

KeymasterRoll-up keyboards or I’ve seen those that fold in half as well. I haven’t used either.
My BT keyboard is one from HP designed for the Touchpad (which I have running Android).

KeymasterNever used something like this, but there are projection keyboards which are even more compact than the small usual ones.

KeymasterFor the most part keyboards designed for carry & use outside of the office are usually slim, light weight and able to take mild abuse without damage.
Flat keyboards like the ones you find on most new laptops are attached in two places on the key and on the board (four points of contact) so the chances of randomly loosing a key is very low.
I have a Microsoft Bluetooth mobile keyboard 500 that I have previously just put into my pack with the keys facing the back panel and off I went with no issues, if I were to be carrying it everyday then I would most probably look at getting or making a light fabric cover for it to stop debris from getting under the keys.

KeymasterSince it’s for a tablet, try looking at a folio type of case, or something like Zagg Keyboards for iPads. They’re bluetooth, offer different backlighting, ect. And when shut it protects the screen of the device in your bag. I don’t know if they make one for your Kindle, but worth looking into.

KeymasterIt’s just something I built myself, non standard stagger, non standard layout, 4 layer programmable board. Full metal build so heavy and very sturdy.

KeymasterI often bring a Logitech dinovo mini along with my tablet when traveling, it works great if you’re used to thumb-typing & comes with lid that you have to fold open before use to protect it. It’s not a cheap one though.
