Dang it! I bought the tab as a one piece solution and took a silent oath “no keyboard, no keyboard, . . .” ,but I miss real typing! Really dislike how the Nexus 7 tries it’s darnedest to be my editor too. Haven’t looked for a replacement keyboard app. Now this thread may make me cave.
Wow, prices for external keyboards are all over the map for what looks to be the same item.

These are cool. Just a couple of words of warning though. If you are the kind of person that types with proper technique and/or fast, these types of keyboards will most likely frustrate you rather than help you out. There are also keyboard cases out there that have the keyboard integrated into the case…iHome, Kensington and Logitech make some of the better products in this category, IHMO.

I’ve had fairly good success with the Minisuit Ultra Thin Touchpad Keyboard. I found the review here to be pretty accurate.

Pros: works seamlessly with my Galaxy S3, provides all the keys I could ask for (alt, control, |, etc.) and is compact and durable enough that it’s become a regular in my bag. The touchpad is a useful as well, otherwise I’d have to carry both a mouse and keyboard.

Cons: the feel isn’t great, and because it’s compact it’s relatively slow to type on. It’s back to the days of thumb typing, rather than a touch typing.

A larger keyboard probably makes more sense for a tablet. For my little cell phone, I couldn’t justify carrying around a keyboard (and mouse) that was larger than the device itself.

Still, the keyboard let’s me use SSH and other unix tools with relative ease, which helps make up for the compact size.

If you’re looking for occasional keyboard use, and you want a durable model, it may be the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions and wisdom, folks. I’ll be taking a closer look at these.

I’ve tried a variety of BT keyboards, but none can keep up with me. I’m an old school typist who can hit 120 words a minute when I get going. A touch screen can’t keep up either about half the time. I use an ultra book. Size of a tablet, just slightly thicker, but a proper keyboard.

Having to look for a new keyboard is exactly why I never got rid of my old iGO that I used to use with my Palm Pilots.

I did try one other at the time but don’t remember what it was, I do remember that it wasn’t nearly as good.
The iGO is great as long as you’re mainly typing words and don’t have to get into numbers. You can do numbers reasonably easily but will have to use a function button and the top row of keys.
Otherwise it’s very close to full size and feels like typing on any normal laptop keyboard.

(I brought it out and dusted it off just to type this 🙂 )

The apple blue tooth keyboard is actually pretty portable.
Had one from a machine that died, but eBay has plenty deeply discounted.
There are also knockoffs on eBay as well.

Fits in a Home Depot husky 2.99 document case. Used that with a tablet for over a year for anytime I had to do more then a few sentences of email.

I like either a Happy Hacker Keyboard or a nice 60% mechanical keyboard like my KBT Pure or my Poker II. They type great, are small, and are rugged. A soft cloth drawstring pouch would be the perfect carry for it. I don’t currently EDC a keyboard but I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while. I’m into infosec for a living and can be called upon to login to a box at any time. I usually have my laptop with me but just in case it might be nice to be able to connect a keyboard to my Galaxy S4 (soon to be a Note, possibly) in case my laptop is either not present or dead or I can’t find wifi and have to use 4G on my phone.

Also be sure to check out /r/MechanicalKeyboards/ on reddit if you are into keyboards.

I would recommend you keep your S4 and get a 7 or 8 inch tablet to compliment it, (I have a Samsung GS4 and recently brought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7″).

You can set up the WiFi tethering (if allowed by your carrier) to allow the tablet to use the wireless data connection.

It will be far easier for you to work on the larger screen.

But the OP is looking for a good way to carry the keyboard.

I use a apple portable keyboard with the iPad and iPhone for texting and writing messages. Because the touch screen just isn’t good enough for long emails and writing.

So yes a keyboard case of some sorest would be a great idea.

I sometimes use a 10 inch tablet neoprene tablet case for the keyboard I use. MIT is not ideal, but it works. Looking for better ideas…
