    Two part question:

    1) I’d like a suggestion for a good pair of sub $100 earbuds. I use Sony MDR 7506’s when I’m at home, but they’re too big for everyday carry.

    2) Suggestions on how to carry said earbuds. The ones I’ve used in the past always get tangled and fuzzy with pocket lint. Anybody have a method of avoiding these problems?

I don’t remember the model number, but I use some Sony noise canceling in-ear buds. I carry them wrapped around the swipey card thing for the gym to keep them from getting tangled since that’s about the only place I use them.

By far the best earbuds I’ve ever owned are the Sennheiser CX-300II. They have a balanced, natural sound, and come with a multitude of silicone buds. There’s bound to be a pair that fits your ears. In fact, these are the only earbuds that fit my ears comfortably.

I believe they sell for about $60-$65, and they are absolutely worth every cent!

I don’t use earbuds anymore but when I did, I used a Nite-Ize CurvyMan Cord Supervisor to keep my cord all nice and neat.

I use some Shure’s, about 7 yrs old. The equivalent now, I think, would be the SE215’s. They have sleeves you change out to get the right fit. Probably right at the top of your budget. For carrying, I used to keep them in an Altoids tin, to avoid the fuzz/tangle. Now they just live in my bag.

I have to say that a lot of these suggestions for the higher end earbuds have poor reviews on Amazon. I can’t afford to drop that kind of money on something that won’t last.

I just got my hands on a tin to keep them in, so that answers that end of the question.

It seems to me the Sennheisers get pretty decent reviews. Also, you can get them as low as $30 now.

mic would be nice, but not a necessity. I was actually thinking about the Sony MDREX100’s. I suppose I don’t need to be an audiophile when I’m on the go. The price is well under 100 too.

I would have a look at the Soundmagic E10’s – not a big well known brand like Sony or Sennheiser, but superb quality headphones and great value.

The Sennheiser CX300’s I have tried in the past but didn’t get on so well with – they sound great and are fantastic value, but I found that they are so small and low profile I couldn’t get a good enough grip on them to seat them correctly in my ears to get a proper (and comfortable) seal – The Soundmagic’s I have now were a similar price, easily equal (if not slightly better) quality and are perfectly sized and shaped for me.

As for carrying them, I use a small Lowepro hardshell camera case – coil the cord up neatly (the over-under technique, rather than just looping them around your fingers) and it is the perfect size to safely hold the headphones (and an ipod nano) and keep everything neat and tidy.

The other alternative (and what I use daily) are a set of more compact over-ear headphones – I have a set of AKG k451’s that also tick all the relevant boxes for sound quality and value, and just have that extra something that larger headphones have over in-ear ones. They also fold up relatively neatly to stuff in your bag (or the provided carry case). A great option if you don’t mind something a little larger. If it makes a difference they come with a removable headphone cable, and come with both a plain version and one with a mobile phone friendly mic too.
