Grad classes are small, so no lecture halls. Five feet at most. For a big lecture hall, I’d probably go with a dedicated recorder. Tigerdirect has a bunch for under $50.

In your price range, probably one of these.
I have a Sony IC Recorder model ICD-UX512. It severs me well. I paid less than $50 for it at my schools bookstore. It has different modes that work for big lecture halls, small class rooms, and up close and personal recording as well. It’s capable of using a micro SD card so you always have plenty of storage room and the internal storage is good too; I think it’s 24 hrs of time. It’s USB compatible with a rechargeable battery. BTW, the first “this” is the one I have and it’s been great. Voices, even far away, are clearly picked up. You can plug it right into your pc and save/backup what you’ve recored in mp3 format.
I’m going to go pick up a simple Sony or Olympus one tonight. Ever since the accident, I can’t take hand notes quite as quickly. 🙂 The recorder will be great this semester.
Be sure and mention that when you ask for permission. They’ll almost certainly let you record then, though they may ask you not share your recording with others.
If that doesn’t work and you find yourself falling behind or, worse, experiencing pain, get a letter from your doctor, remake the request in writing, with a copy to the dean or provost. State that you are requesting a “reasonable accommodation” for your “disability” under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
But don’t expect them to like you much afterward 🙂 (Your education is more important than their feelings, anyway!)
If they do not let you record, considering how its affecting note taking, they will have a load of trouble coming there way *hold me back* xD
