I need a camera, any recommendations?

I’m going on a trip soon and I only use my iPhone4s right now. I love that my pics are in the cloud and I can access them on my iPad2.
But wifey would like a camera. We are both worried that the iPhones won’t hold enough pics, even after upgrading the memory before the trip, because pics only move to the cloud via wifi and that could be scarce.

I kinda think we’ll be alright and don’t want to:
(a) spend the money
(b) deal with having to buy and not lose SD cards
(c) having to get my old computer up and running so I can upload them all.

It seems a total bother to me.

Plus ,we do have a Fuji Fine Pics Z, but it isn’t all that great, plus it has a rechargeable battery which doesn’t last that long.

I think I will not find something I like. But if it can help in any of these areas, then great. (I know I’ll have to keep extra storage cards so thats not really an issue, just another bother that the iPhone doesn’t have.

How much do I want to spend, you ask? None.  But I will
Waterproof? Nice but not an extra I need enough to want to pay for it.

Sorry this recommendation fails on A,B and C . But the Canon ELPH / Power shot SD780 IS is a pretty impressive pocket camera IMO.

I’ll second the ELPH/power shot lineup. Good bang for the buck and I’ve bought 3 over the years as the cameras have improved.

Don’t really have a camera recommendation, but the $30 ipad to sd card adapter will save you the trouble of firing up that old computer.

I read a spec for it and thought that it said it was for downloading off of the ipad and not the other way around?

Yeah, I use one on vacation, very nice. My wife likes the instant gratification of Facebook uploads. Plus there are some pretty respectable editing apps out there too, lots of them are free.

While looking at that camera on Amazon I realized that the batteries for the Finepix Z20 that I have are pretty cheap.

So I think to save some money will buy a few extra batteries, and sd cards, and the iPhone SD adapter.

I know you don’t want to spend much but I’d recommend the Sony DSC-RX100M II in a heartbeat. A ussed it’s well over $500 now though.

It takes really good near SLR quality pictures if not SLR quality and it can connect wirelessly to your iphone to transfer images on the go so you can post them/etc as you wish without having to upload to a computer.

If that’s not in your budget, check out the Sony RX100 (older model of the RX100 II but takes pretty much the same pictures). A used one should be cheaper than the RX100 II…

Other good cameras would be the Fuji X20 or X10 which are still pretty expensive but also great cameras which I’ve owned in the past. One other option would be to upgrade your phone to the new iPhone 5s. I have the iphone 5 and even it takes better pictures than a lot of compact cameras on the market.

I know you don’t want to spend much, if any, but if you give a budget and intended uses (use during the day to take pictures of people, night shots, landscape) we might be able to give you some better recommendations.

I got an Olympus XZ-10 since a week after reading some very positive reviews (in German) and so far I’m pleased. 🙂

One other semi-cheap option to get pics off your camera would be to get an eye.fi sd card… basically an sd card that allows you to wirelessly connect to an ipad or iphone or android phone. Can be had on amazon for $30-$100 depending on size/etc. I have two 8gb cards and they work reasonably well. I don’t actually use them any more (not because they don’t work) because I needed a faster card for my SLR. If anyone’s interested in one, let me know.

Canon S95, S100, or S110. Lens collapses into the camera body making for a very easily-pocketable package.

Maybe consider an Eye – Fi card to send your photos to your iPad, IPhone, and their back-up server. I often use my eye Fi card on shoots for ease. Great card that works wirelessly with most devices!
