Question about iPad stuff

First off , I am completely i-lletrate . I have no idea how to use iPad, iPod , iPhone , or i-anything

My waife has an iPad which carshed once and she lost all those photos of her sister kids and birthdays ..etc. She is now asking me to help her save whatever she has on the iPad so she doesn’t lose them again

So, here is my question
My knowledge is limited to desktop PC ( using Windows XP , and Windows 7). I mostly use the usuall Office programs plus a bit of internet exploring. How do I copy my wife’s fotos and videos from her iPad, and save them on my PC, or a flash drive ???

I would try to explain it in my own words, but since my recent experience has been with a Mac, I figured these instructions would get you going in the right direction more efficiently.

if you have ITunes on your pc then you can download from IPad to pc I do it all the time with the wife’s.

If you have iCloud backup turned on, it should save those photos to the cloud. When you log back in to iCloud after a crash, they should all come back after a sync. Best part is it’s all built in and free as long as you are under the 5gb limit. Check the iCloud settings in the settings menu, and create an account if you haven’t already. It’ll also allow you to track the iPad location should it ever be lost or stolen, and most other apps will use it to save data as well.

You can also use a service like Dropbox that would backup the photos for you and also make them accessible from your computer. I think something like 2.5 GB is free, but they have promotions that let you earn more space all of the time. I’m sitting at sound 33 GB of free storage right now. 🙂

The iPad was designed at least in the beginning to sync with another computer and thus have the copies on the computer just for this type of problem.

All yo need to do is download iTunes to your PC and set the iPad up to Sync with that iTunes and then you will have the backup that you need.

It is free and easy and there is no reason not to do it that I can think of especially if you have already had a bad experience not having the backup.

iCloud is your friend. Just went though all this courtesy of a friendly neighborhood crackhead at work a couple of weeks ago. They makes my company iPad and my iPod out of my work truck. Picked up a new iPad at the shop the next day, logged into my company iCloud account and all my stuff downloaded to my new device. Same with my new iPod. As far a tracking your devices my experience is that is fairly useless unless your device is using the SIM card. No SIM card means it will use the wifi and that will only work when the device is connected to a network. The location error can vary quite a bit but generally within a hundred yards. If your standing in the middle of a field one hundred yards in any direction would be fairly easy to search but that same distance in a typical downtown area becomes a little more difficult. Best thing I have found is make sure you have pass code enabled and remote wipe. At least the SOB won’t get your personal data like that. Also if your device crashes you can restore it fairly easy.

ummmm , one thing seems obvious. Yu are waaayyy ahead of me in this techno stuff .. LOL
Being the old fshioned guy that I am , I think that connecting the iPad to OC with a USB cable is the way to go.

I have heard of cloud computing but (a) I am not a very technical guy (b) I don’t like third person (or thrid whatever) to be trusted with my wife’s stuff. In addition, there is no need for accessing this stuff from another location. They are fotos of family occasions and such, not professional documents to be accessed in an urgent meeting.

So, I prefer to copy things in my PC thrugh a cable (old fashioned way LOL), then store them in a flash drive stashed safely in the drawer. I will check and download iTunes and see how it works

You can set up a free Dropbox account and that will work fine across platforms, Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.. Store whatever pictures you want to keep there and back them up to an external hard drive or burn to a disc or whatever you want. That is what I do with the pictures I take and documents for work that I want to save. If I take a picture with my iPhone I can put a copy in Dropbox and the next time I have my Windows laptop out save to my drive from there. Works pretty well since we use Windows laptops and iPad with iPhone at work. The free Dropbox account is fine too since you would just be using it as a holding area to transfer stuff as well.

Plug it in and under My Pc(in windows 7 it is called Computer) look for your iDevice. Open it and you will find folders of your photos. You then can copy them from there to your computer.
