this weekend i was able to spend a little time in the garage, and knocked this out. i cheated a little and used a rod of aluminum from an old wind chime set.
the inside is a fisher cartridge, the same type as used in a “zip pen” a pen that attaches to your finger.
the cartridge is held into the black front with a pressfit, and i merely used a 10-32 die to cut some threads into the head. it works, but due to the low quality of the plastic molding, (the two diameters weren’t concentric to each other), it didn’t work as well as i had hoped.
the body was drilled first with a #21 drill (if i recall correctly), and tapped a short way down with a 10-32 tap. about a quarter inch into the part, i used a .120 drill for the length of the cartridge (1.500 inches deep).
the plan was to use stainless, but with this old chunk of aluminum handy, with the ring hole already predrilled, i decided to make a quick proto. i’m glad i did, beause while it indeed works quite well, i’m not very satisfied with the quality of the black headpiece, and am considering other means of assembly.
