KeymasterI was originally going to post this on the Spyderco forums, but I’m waiting for my account to be activated by a moderator, so I thought I’d post it here as well to see if anyone has any suggestions. So here’s the post:
I’m highly encouraged by the hype, so I’m going to take the plunge and buy my first Spyderco(s), but I need some guidance on which model(s) to get. I’ve drawn up some requirements that my first Spydie(s) needs to meet:
- Readily available online (Amazon.com or a reputable online knife dealer such as knifecenter.com)
- Plain edge
- Blade length: no longer than 3.5″; Shorter is fine
- Non-flimsy blade or tip (not able to be flexed by hand)
- Around $50 preferably, but up to $70 (less than $50 is good too)
- Must have a pocket clip; Tip up is preferred, but not necessary
- No Byrd models
- Easy to clean (you define “easy”
) - Able to be disassembled is a plus, but not necessary
So, if you could list any models that meet these requirements, that would be awesome. Pictures are always good too.

I’ve also been eyeing specific models, and I need some advice as to whether or not they meet some of the requirements. After carrying a Kershaw Leek as my EDC knife for several months, and I’ve decided that I need to rethink my approach to knives, and formulate a new line up. I found a few Spyderco models that really caught my eye, and I’ve come up with a possible all-Spyderco lineup:
- Beater: Tasman Salt OR Spyderhawk Salt
- Backup: Etched Cricket
- Main Blade: Gray FFG Delica OR one of the suggestions that results from my requirements
So, my questions for these models are:
- How sturdy are the blade and tip on the FFG Delica?
- Are the Tasman and Spyderhawk resistant to grit and sand, or at least able to be cleaned easily?
- Is the Tasman large enough to be an effective beater? I really like the look of the Spyderhawk, but it’s price is making me wary. It’s going to be tough to pick between the two.
If you suffered through my entire post, I commend you! I eagerly await your replies.
Thanks,
Simsmac
