Keymasterust a reminder – most duct tape conducts. And a lot of plastics will create a static charge.
Electrical tape seems the way to go.
I went to the vet with some friends. They always say I’m a sick puppy.

KeymasterVery good point.
Pros, or even us amateurs who’ve had a bad experience, find a way while still in the field to copy the files from the SD card to another location. Eye-fi card is one way, but pricey and means having a laptop. A tablet with a card reader connection is another way, but limited can be limited storage especially if you are shooting raw and a lot. Then there are dedicated portable drives to which you can connect and easily copy a card’s contents. If you are just out fussing around you may not need these options. But if you are shooting anything that would take time & effort or an act of God to recreate, maybe find a way to make sure your files don’t go vapor. Too many of us have lost a card or had a failure of some sort.

I’m currently looking into that too.
I’ve been asked to shoot a friend’s event, and I’m absolutely bricking it.My camera has some wi-fi capabilities built in, but I don’t think they’ll cut it.

I didn’t know duct-tape was conductive. You learn something new every day.
Thanks for the heads up 🙂November 24, 2025 at 7:36 am #103726admin

That’s great! Your friend is supportive and believes in you.Best advice I ever got was to shoot about 100x …ok make that 200x…as many photos as you think you should. Sure, spend time with adjustments and such, but really just shoot and shoot and shoot. If you knew how many discards the pros end up with, you’d be amazed. At first if you are at all lucky, 4 in 100 shots will be worth sharing. Later you get that number up as you develop a sense of everything, but always play the odds. Your subjects aren’t going to be pros either, so they won’t be cooperative with smiling at the same time, looking at you, holding still…just keep shooting. Then don’t be shy about telling people what to do. Look here! Hey, can you move about 18″ to your right? Get closer together! Everyone! Hey! Hey! Look at the camera! Look at the camera (they look at you instead).
Then when you get home with the 40k shots, started editing. Crop, touch up, fix levels…make the subjects look good and they will love your work. I’ve found that I NEVER admit how much I touch up a subject. They ask, and I might say, “a little, because of the lighting”, but I never ever tell them. And some will moan about how I should have touched up the photos, how bad they look…if only they knew how the original image looked!
For sure not telling you anything you don’t already know, I’m just excited for you. Sounds like you are pursuing something you’ve found that draws you, and what a blessing that is. Congrats on the journey. Be sure to let us know how the event goes!

That looks very close to ideal.
looking around thier site, it’s just a shame their “Modular pixel pocket rocket” doesn’t come in an SD card only
I use the CF card version for SD Cards. It perfectly fits SD cards inside the little plastic cases they come in. Well that SanDisk cards come in. I like the additional protection even though the pocket rockets are excellent as they are.November 24, 2025 at 7:37 am #103736admin
KeymasterIf you do want the SD card version it is definitely available in stock in the UK currently. Just replace Modular with SD. Or try googling Speedgraphic.

Honestly, I’d make something.Get those fake credit cards they ship people (or a used gift card), put some electrical/duct tape wrapped around the card, make a few flaps with some more tape, then put some grippy material (probaby more tape) on the interior of the flap.
Should hold 4-8 reliably, and cheaply. Heck, it might fit in your wallet. Talk about convenience.
never put SDcards in your wallet. you will sit on them and bend them and have other stuff in there that might put pressure on them. had an old 2gb one with a linux system in my wallet for 1 year or so. first the lock came off (->read-only card), then some months later it fell into pieces. (->no card)November 24, 2025 at 7:39 am #103745admin
KeymasterThe modular version is a different design to the standard pocket rockets. More of a pouch than a wallet.
Only made in CF+Sd though. The standard Sd pocket rocket is something I have found, along with a similar design by tenba tools
Wish you hadn’t told me about that Google search. That’s local enough to cost me a lot of money in the future 😀

KeymasterNooooooooo
Get home, copy all the cards to your computer.
Make a backup copy (on a seperate hard drive, if they are really important, a second hard drive stored offsite)
Then start working on them – you dont want to do a destructive edit and accidentally save over the original file
Keep the pics on the cards until your next job – that way if theres a catastrophic failure (power surge destroys computer and HDD) you might still have a copy.November 24, 2025 at 7:39 am #103749admin
KeymasterI’ll add a few thoughts.
– First, the very best precaution you can take is to buy good quality cards from a reputable manufacturer. I only use SanDisk and pretty much only their Extreme Pro range. These primarily because I need cards that give best transfer rates. The slightly cheaper Extreme version are more than fast enough for full HD video (50 Mbps).
– Second, always, always buy from a source that you know gets its cards from the mfr. Unexpectedly good deals on-line means there is a very good chance you are getting counterfeit. Guess whether their transfer rates and failure rates are as good as the genuine article.
– Third, you don’t need the very latest and largest size. There is a good school of thought that says that keeping at the cutting edge (eg largest card with greatest density) gives higher risk of failure. That may be urban legend but what is certain is that they are disproportionately expensive and its perhaps better to have photos on several cards; if you loose one, you haven’t lost all your pics of the day. I’m happily using fast 16GB cards but I do have two card slots.
– Four, if you still worried, a camera with the two slots set up to make duplicates on the second card would give better peace of mind. Probably not helpful idea unless you already have such! Personally, I’ve never gone this way.
– Five, never, ever, pull a card from a camera while it’s still writing. The card light on the camera back will be flashing if this is happening. It won’t necessarily corrupt the card but there is a much higher chance of doing so.
– Six, general consensus is to reformat your cards in camera each time to erase cards for reuse rather than doing mass deletes on a PC or in camera. This way, if there are any iffy sectors they get identified / ignored. Again, might be urban legend but it’s also quicker and I’ve never had a problem. (Secondary tip, make this part of your regular workflow and reformat before putting cards back in your storage pouch. This way I know I have copied, backed up etc and never have a prob putting a half full card back in camera and running out of space and then wondering if I really had copied stuff off properly.)
– Seven, if you think you have abused, twisted, jammed or accidentally driven over a card in Land Cruiser (yes…) then just bin it (after copying off that last set of photos).Touchwood, following the above , I’ve never had an issue with dozens of cards and probably some thousands of uses in very varied climates around the world.
Then, pretty much the best way of copying is to use a fast USB 3 card reader into a laptop as soon as practical. Much faster than USB 2 or camera wifi which is still generally more trouble than useful.

KeymasterI go one step further with potentially destructive editing, and use a ‘working copy’ separate from the originals and backups thereof.
That way, if I screw up, it’s a completely separate file from everything else. And I keep the original version for future use.Sent via psychic link from the 31st century

KeymasterDouble amen to all the backups and copies before anything else, excellent steps to note! I have a waterproof, fireproof local drive (ioSafe) plus cloud storage copies (Dropbox), then backup copies in two places (TimeMachine and Crashplan). While editing, I also believe in versioning copies.
