KeymasterJust came across Opinel X L.L. Bean:
Moosehead Lake, Maine in the early 20th century was a major spot for wood suppliers. And their lumberjacks would use the lake as a means to transport the chopped tree trunks – a process known as sluicing. Inevitably, some of those logs would end up sinking. And, since old-timey logging operations didn’t have the means, there was nothing that could be done but leave them there. Now, however, Opinel and L.L. Bean have teamed up to retrieve said logs and build some limited edition No. 8 camp knives out of the wood.
This maple survived for so long thanks to the low oxygen levels of the water at the bottom of Moosehead Lake. And the “sunken” wood also garnered some benefits from the process – namely a reduction of sap and a more tight and uniform grain patterns. Apart from the century-old underwater wood handle, this knife is still an Opinel through and through. It has a Sandvik steel blade, the brand’s signature Virobloc ring, and was crafted in their factory at the foothills of the Alps. For just $40, you can own one of these beautiful and functional piece of history.

I had one and gifted it to a friend who fishes quite often. I advised him of how to dry it out and oil it and the whole bit. He’s in love with the knife. I also have a Garden knife. Same slim No.8 handle. Unique drop point blade made of the stainless steel. Almost the same pocketability . Great knife. Much more robust than the Effile. Although during holiday family meals, when someone asks you to carve a bird or ham (because you are the “knife guy”, and in my family I am also the amateur cook), and hands you a needlepoint serrated knife that was bought off an infomercial in 1988… you can calmly pull the Opinel from your pocket and begin carving!November 24, 2025 at 5:33 am #102891admin

Welcome to the club! I have a modified and standard #7, and am halfway through a second modified version (2 months :/ I’ll get there). I personally love the customizable nature of them.Opinels are old designs, as are we. They have character and don’t always work perfectly, same as us. But they’re sharp and functional, as we’d like to be. So congrats! Send photos!

And that why I stick to the plain Jane Opinels. I can’t keep them away from my pile of sandpaper!November 24, 2025 at 5:33 am #102895admin

Very nice patina on the blade. Did you force it or did it occur over time? ThanksNovember 24, 2025 at 5:34 am #102903admin
KeymasterCall me old fashioned, but if it isn’t earned the hard way, its a fashion statement not “patina”.
